Next iPhone To Have 8MP Camera, Better Antenna, and Same CPU As iPad 2

Chalk this one up as a new rumour regarding Apple's next iPhone. Apple Insider is reporting that the next iPhone that gets introduced this year will have the same A5 CPU that you'll find in the iPad 2 meaning that the Galaxy S II will have the upper-hand if the software follows suit. Other rumoured specs are said to be an 8MP camera (likely from Sony), an improved antenna, and a Qualcomm chip that'll do GSM and CDMA just for good measure.

The design of the next iPhone is said to be the same as the iPhone 4 (think iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS), but we have heard rumours in the past of an aluminum back. Rumoured release is said to be September but we know that Apple rumours tend to get out of hand all the time. What to believe...?

Sony CEO Says Next iPhone Will Have 8MP Camera, Next-Gen iPod Nano Case Has Camera Hole

Two interesting pieces of news surfaced over the weekend and they're regarding Apple. The first one is just a brief statement that Sony's CEO, Howard Stringer, made. Apparently, he mentioned that Sony will be taking over OmniVision as Apple's camera supplier for the next iPhone model. Of course, this could mean that the next iPhone could sport a pretty awesome 8MP rear-facing camera.

The other piece of news is actually what you see above - coming from Apple.pro. That's not just a random green case. This is reportedly the next-gen Apple iPod Nano case and, yes, that hole could mean that a camera will be present. Yes, a camera is a great addition but it'll be pretty awkward if this is the only device you carry around with you that can take a [bad] photo.

BBM Now Rumoured To Be Hitting the App Store On April 26th -- Negative, Says RIM

In the Mac Rumors forum there's, obviously, a new rumour that has been passing around. Apparently, in the Toronto event today, RIM's co-CEO, Jim Balsillie, mentioned that BBM "and 'services'" would be available on the iPhone App Store on April 26th. Of course, there's no way to confirm this but I hope it hits Android on the same day - which isn't looking too likely right now. Of course, the BBM for other platforms will just be a stripped down version so it might be a legitimate threat to other messaging services.

Update: BGR has contacted RIM and they mentioned that the rumour is false. RIM reportedly didn't even hold a conference in Toronto so it's absolutely made up.

WWDC 2011 Starts On June 6th, Showing Off iOS and Mac OS X; Next iPhone Too?

Apple looks like they're going to be starting WWDC 2011 this year on June 6th which is a Monday. Usually, this is where the company unveils the next iPhone but recent rumours suggest that this might not be the case this time around. It says that we'll be joining them "for a preview of the future of iOS and Mac OS X" so we should get another look at Lion as well as iOS 5 - hopefully, release dates on both. We're still crossing our fingers for the next-generation iPhone to be announced.

Apple's Next iPhone Prototype Possibly Leaks, Aluminum Back and Larger Display?

First off, the image above is not real; it's just a "metal" sticker for the iPhone 4 so don't go crazy. Getting back on track, the latest rumour states that Apple's next iPhone that'll be launching this Summer will reportedly feature a metal back and the sexy-looking iPhone 4 design. Of course, there's no way to confirm this news but the prototypes were apparently leaked from Foxconn. Furthermore, the display for the next iPhone is said to be a bit larger than the current model so I'm wondering if the pixel density will remain the same.

Apparently, the display will be 4-inches but we've been hearing about this rumour for a while now. Of course, Apple's next iPhone could have an edge-to-edge display which would be great so let's hope they also get rid of some bezel on the top and the bottom.

Apple's Next iPhone Rumoured To Feature Dual SIM Card Slot

iDealsChina has just mentioned something that some people could be looking for (not me). Apparently, the latest rumour on the street says that Apple's next phone (in June) could actually be sporting a dual-SIM card slot which is quite interesting. This would be great for those that carry around two phones because you can just jam both of your SIM cards into one phone which would be convenient. Of course, this is just a rumour right now because the website doesn't have a 100% track record.

Apple's Tim Cook Hints At a Prepaid iPhone, Adds Fuel To the Fire Of Rumours

The WSJ and Forbes has just mentioned some pretty good news. Remember the news about a smaller iPhone that would be hitting the prepaid market for $199? Well, Tim Cook from Apple might have just hinted at it when he talked to Bernstein Research analyst, Toni Sacconaghi. Cook mentioned that "Apple didn't want its products to be 'just for the rich,' but 'for everyone'; he also stated that Apple 'understood price is big factor in the prepaid market' and that the company was 'not ceding any market.'" Basically, Apple could be working on that prepaid iPhone that a bunch of tweens may be looking for.

Possible Next-Gen iPhone Part Leaks, Thin Bezel With a Slightly Larger Display

Coming from a Chinese reseller's website is what you see above which it looking like it could be a next-gen iPhone part. Measurements for this one unknown but thin bezels could be pointing at a 3.7 or even a 4-inch display for the next iPhone which should be launching in June. The part does tell us that the lone 'Home' button is here to stay and there'll, of course, be a front-facing camera.

Wintek Supplying Apple With White iPhone 5 Parts?

Coming from DigiTimes is a rumour about a white iPhone 5 launching - even though the white iPhone 4 has been heavily delayed and still isn't available. Interesting. Apparently, Wintek is supplying Apple white iPhone 5 touch panels . Well, there's really no way to confirm this until Apple announces the next iPhone which should be in June. Maybe they should focus on releasing the white iPhone 4 for now.

Apple's Next iPhone To Have a 4-Inch Display?

Apple rumours go crazy this time of year. Just these past few days we've heard of Apple testing three next-gen iPhone prototypes including one with a QWERTY keyboard (that'll probably never get released) and we also heard that the company is working on a smaller iPhone - with iPhone 4 parts - that'll reportedly cost $200 contract-free which would be amazing. Today we're hearing something new from DigiTimes which also sounds great.

The firm has mentioned that Apple's next iPhone may actually feature a larger (and much better) 4-inch display. So much for 3.5-inches being the perfect size. They're likely doing this to stunt the growth of larger and higher-end Android devices because I believe that 4-inch displays are the perfect size for smartphones right now. Well, we'll see if this ever happens.

Bloomberg Says Apple Is Working On a Smaller iPhone With iPhone 4 Components

Coming from Bloomberg is word that Apple is actually working on a smaller iPhone that's rumoured to cost $199.99 contract-free. This prototype that they're testing right now is apparently one-third smaller than the iPhone 4 and will use similar components to the iPhone 4 to keep costs down. I'm assuming they're going to be targeting teens for this one because a smaller display than the iPhone 4's will be hard to type on if you have adult hands and fingers. Interesting. Maybe it'll be launched this year.

Apple iPhone: 2 better than 1

Apple says "Two is better than one." Better for Apple; better for consumers; better for all the suppliers of iPhone components; better for mobile app providers working in the Apple ecosystem; arguably better for Verizon Wireless; not good for AT&T; still bad for Sprint and T-Mobile USA.

That sort of illustrates the conundrum mobile service providers now face, and that fixed-line providers have faced for some time, notably that value in both ecosystems has shifted in the direction of devices and apps.

That isn't to say "access" lacks definite value. Spending time someplace with no broadband access, or with poor access, will quickly illustrate the point. Of course, contestants in the apps and devices parts of the ecosystem would say they face significant competitive pressure as well.

But the fact remains: people might "love" their apps and devices. They rarely have any emotional attachment to their "access." Of course, it is much harder to develop a true brand preference for an intangible product, compared to something tangible such as a device or a favored application.

From Apple's point of view, two is better than one. But the ad indirectly points out yet again where value is shifting in the communications business.

No Need to Depict iPhone, Verizon Wireless Believes

Some might wonder, in this Verizon Wireless ad for the iPhone, where the iPhone is. Of course, some might ask who in the potential audience does not know what an iPhone is, or what it looks like, or what it can do. In that case, there isn't so much value showing the device, is there?

In the US Market, iPhone Outperforms Other Mobile Platforms in User Loyalty by a Wide Margin, Android is Second, Blackberry Fourth

The Apple iPhone scores 84 percent higher in loyalty ratings than the nearest competitor, Google Android. Among non-iPhone users, the number one preference for the next smartphone is iPhone.

The benchmark results by Zokem also show that older Windows Mobile devices and Nokia’s Symbian devices have already lost the game in the United States.

Both Microsoft and Nokia are, however, coming back with new offerings and trying to challenge the top three platforms – iPhone, Android and Blackberry – when measured by user loyalty.

During 2010 Android emerged as the single best selling mobile platform in the United States.

Verizon Wireless iPhone Upgrades?

Verizon Wireless Offers $200 Trade-In for an iPhone

Current Verizon customers who purchased and activated new smartphones, feature phones or certified pre-owned phones between Nov. 26, 2010, and Jan. 10, 2011, are eligible to receive up to a $200 Visa debit card when they purchase an iPhone 4 at full retail price by Feb. 28, 2011 and return their existing phone.

This offer is only available on consumer accounts with five lines or less, who are purchasing iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless retail stores, telesales, or through verizonwireless.com.

Projecting iPhone's Effect on Verizon's 2011 Wireless Revenues - Seeking Alpha

By one survey conducted by Compete, about 8.7 percent of Verizon Wireless customers are waiting for a specific phone model before upgrading to a smartphone, and most assume that means the Apple iPhone.

According to Verizon’s third-quarter 2010 financial statement, only 23 percent of Verizon’s 82 million post-paid subscribers currently had a smartphone. This means that there is a potential pool of some 63 million post-paid cellphone owners that Verizon can convert to the iPhone, without stealing away a single new net add.

If the 8.7 percent of existing Verizon's customers who are waiting for a specific phone choose to upgrade to an iPhone, Verizon could enjoy a spike of more than 5.4 million new iPhone customers in 2011.

Even if just three million existing non-smartphone Verizon Wireless subscribers upgrade to the iPhone, Verizon Wireless could earn more than a billion dollars in additional data revenue over a two-year period, assuming new monthly data plan revenues of $15 a month and two-year contract lengths.

That does not even account for net customer gains Verizon might pick up as customers from AT&T and other service providers move over to Verizon Wireless to use the iPhone on the Verizon network.

Will Verizon iPhone Sales Change iPhone Demographics?

Irrespective of the ultimate changes in the smartphone and broader U.S. mobile business that might ultimately result from the new Verizon Wireless deal with Apple giving it the right to sell the iPhone, the iPhone user base looks like it will continue to be a choice target for brands looking to advertise.

Though change is likely as the iPhone user base moves from early adopter to mainstream users, the early demographics have been attractive for brands. Up to this point. iPhone users heavily over-index in some of the most attractive advertising segments, including 25 to 34 year olds (index of 175), 18 to 24 year olds (index of 141) and 35 to 44 year olds (index of 129) and are 22 percent more likely than an average mobile subscriber to be male.

Up to this point, iPhone users often also have represented higher income brackets, with 81 percent of users having a household income of at least $50,000 and 47 percent of users reporting a household income of at least $100,000. That demographic pattern, of course, will become less prominent as the iPhone continues to diffuse throughout the general population.
